With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Dr. Emilio Cuevas, former Scientific Director of the Izaña Atmospheric Research Center in Tenerife, who left us on Thursday, 26 February.
Emilio had stepped down from his duties a few months earlier, choosing early retirement in order to face a health battle that he fought with courage and dignity until his final hours.
A Pillar of ICOS Spain
Emilio was a founding figure of ICOS Spain. From the very beginning of the Integrated Carbon Observation System, he worked tirelessly to secure Spain’s integration into the network, a goal that was ultimately achieved in 2021. His perseverance and vision were instrumental in aligning Spanish atmospheric research with the highest international standards.

A Lasting Legacy
While his extensive scientific bibliography speaks for itself, his most tangible legacy is the Izaña Atmospheric Observatory. Thanks to his unwavering dedication, he transformed Izaña into a world-leading reference station for greenhouse gas monitoring and analysis, supported by both WMO-GAW and ACTRIS certifications.
Beyond the data and the instruments, Emilio leaves behind a center of excellence that will continue to serve the planet for decades to come.
Rest in peace, Emilio Cuevas.
